In this debut novel, Kitasei has crafted an enthralling story about a mission into deep space that quickly becomes a fight for survival. what a disappointment.If you’re a science fiction fan and love thrilling tales of deep space exploration, Yume Kitasei’s The Deep Sky is the book for you. plus how could you write a book where none of the main characters from the original trilogy (aside from madoc, if he even counts) make an appearance? especially jude and cardan who only get passing references? holly black really thought she could make oak a knockoff, less charismatic version of cardan and we wouldn’t notice? and give us wren, who pales in comparison to the brilliant protagonist that was jude? and don’t even get me started on the so-called romance (and no, i don’t normally care all that much about romance but when you’ve set the bar high with previous books AND you’ve got a subpar plot, you’ve gotta give me something). i’m so unmoved by it i honestly can’t even be bothered to give it a proper review. i was so excited for the stolen heir as i LOVED the original trilogy, but i was hanging on for dear life to not DNF this one. but for now, i’m giving TFS 3.5* rounded up to 4. I’m really hoping that there’s a decent payoff in the sequel and that the plot focus stays where it should be because i’ve been persuaded to read it. when hassa’s storyline began to take more focus towards the end is when the book improves in a big way. I wish more focus had been given to the far more interesting ‘side plot’ involving hassa and the wider questions on the empire, rather than the main focus on the trials, which was choppy, poorly executed, and not that engaging. it had a great premise but needed better execution and was unnecessarily long.

yeah, those kinds of books are infuriating, and the final strife is one of them. This is one of those annoying books where it’s pretty middling most of the way through and you’re convinced that you won’t continue with the series after you finish this instalment, only to find that the last chunk is exciting and gripping and leaves you with so many questions that you just have to read the next book to find out what happens next.
